I've been here probably ten times in the last two years. The banh mi is wonderful; the bread is crispy, the pickled vegetables nicely sour, the pâté solid. You could ask for extra butter, but I don't see any reason to. My favorites are the #2 combo and the #13 meatball egg, which I got today. Don't sleep on the che tai, the pennywort juice, and the various boxed meals.

Banh Mi Ba Le is a small takeout only shop that offers delicious and cheap banh mi sandwiches! It's located in a part of Oakland that's quite sketchy, so I was a bit nervous parking on the street. Ordering and getting the food took longer than expected too, close to 25 minutes, so I recommend parking in their back parking lot if you can. They have TV screens in the restaurant monitoring the lot, so you can keep an eye on your car. I came Sunday afternoon around 12:40 and there were maybe 10 people in line ahead of me. Some people only got 1-2 banh mi, but others got a whole bag, so it takes longer than you'd expect for your turn to order. In addition to banh mi, they have some Asian chips and other snacks as well as packaged spring rolls with various ingredients. There's also a whole drink menu featuring fruit shakes and Vietnamese coffee. I was grabbing lunch for a group, so I ordered 6 banh mi total + a Vietnamese coffee for $45. They accept credit card, but there's a 3.9% fee for paying with card, so I paid with cash. For myself, I got two sandwiches since it was my first time here and I couldn't decide what to get: the #2 special combo with ham ($5.60) and the #13 meatball and egg sandwich ($7), both with extra pate and no jalapenos or cilantro. I don't get banh mi that often, so I'm no expert but any means, but these were some of the best I've had. The bread was incredibly light and fluffy, and the sandwiches were packed full of meat and pickled veggies. The meatball and egg one is more like ground pork and egg and was a bit sweet. I ate it while picnic-ing next to Lake Merritt and it was the perfect picnic meal. It doesn't look that big, but I was stuffed after eating it (plus some other pastries) and only needed a light dinner afterwards. I had the special ham combo sandwich the next day. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't be as good after sitting in the fridge for a day, but I took it out 2 hours before eating and then heated it up in my toaster oven and it was still amazing. Overall, despite my initial unease about the location, the delicious food at Banh Mi Ba Le more than made up for it. I only wish they were open more than 3 days a week, but I get it given their location.

I recently tried Banh Mi Ba Le and let me tell you, their sandwiches are amazing! The flavors were so delicious and fresh. However, if you're a vegetarian, there are only a few options available. When I arrived, there was a line out the door, but it was definitely worth the wait. The outside of the restaurant looks a bit sketchy, but don't let that deter you. They have a parking lot in the back which is convenient, they have a TV monitor inside where you can view parking lot. Overall, Banh Mi Ba Le is a great spot for a casual and tasty meal. I highly recommend giving it a try!
